Settled In

Oops. Obviously I haven't been great about keeping this blog updated, but I promise that I'll make a concentrated effort to maintain it more frequently for the rest of the semester. Kay?

Alright, it has been tremendously busy since my last post (more than two weeks ago)! Let's get going with my rundown:

- All of my classes are interesting and challenging in different ways. Obviously, my biggest complaint is the class length period--almost three hours. I understand why it's necessary for this type of program, but it's a killer. European Mass Media is right up my alley, and it works as a great companion class to my internship (more about that later). I'm still unsure of how I feel about this public service broadcasting structure compared to the American business model. Sociology of London is a little tough for me; I've always been skeptical of the actual science of sociology for having limited tangible quantitative measures and research. Contemporary British Politics is really enjoyable, but I'm finding it difficult to divert my attention away from US politics with so much going on right now (by the way, I can't wait to vote next week in the expatriate primaries).

- "We are QPR, we are QPR!" I attended my first professional England football (aka soccer) match! I really dig how intense the fans get and how strong their pride is for their teams. It was a blast, and I totally would like to go to another one before the semester is up!

- I went on a group tour with the ICLC program to Bath and the West Country. Day 1 included stops at Avebury, Glastonbury (where we saw the ruins of the Abbey and King Arthur's supposed burial place), Wells, and finally Bath. On the first night in Bath, we went out to a cool pub with almost all of the IC kids, and then I went with some cool cats that I just met that day to a really awesome club where I ended up meeting this smokin' hot British girl ;). The pictures below are at the Abbey and at the top of the Glastonbury Tor.

- Day 2 of the Bath trip included a a tour of the Roman Baths Museum, a walking tour of Georgian Bath (courtesy of Bill), and a stop at the legendary and mystical Stonehenge. The whole trip was really cool because it exposed us to areas in England we might not have seen otherwise and it allowed me to meet some cool people and strengthen my relationship with some kids I know.

- I had my preliminary interview and a sort of orientation half-day with my Channel 4 internship so far. The whole thing is terribly exciting; I get my own e-mail address, ID card, and desk (with a flat screen computer and LCD TV, natch)! My supervisor is really cool but also very busy working on a annual report to Ofcom, and my coworkers all seem like really chill people. I should begin an actual project starting on Tuesday. The building is incredible, too...I'll have pictures later, but I've been having a few snafus with my camera.

- Weekends mostly include pubbing, clubbing, etc. This weekend: Thursday night at the ISH pub, Friday night at a pub and a club near Edgware Road, and last night was a mad fun gay pub in Soho.

- Next weekend is Liverpool!

- Good news and bad news from friends elsewhere. Good news: Teddi's coming to visit in March! I can't wait! Bad news: Greg's and my spring break does not coincide with J's, Carly's, and Joyeta's spring break. No week in Italy with the crew :(. Tentatively, we're looking at Greece with a visit to Joyeta in Volos.

Alright, I'm signing off now. Keep in contact; I love to hear from everyone. Next update should come sooner than later (fingers crossed).
